Renaissance Faire Encounter
By Mina Krause, '20
I had just bought a smoothie
And told the vendor my name was Liz
Slipping in-and-out of people’s way
While watching costumes and armor and happy faces
I saw you
Clad in a black cape and confidence
Only found in us faire-goers
I didn’t see your face
But I had seen you around before
The costumes are always easy to spot
You were there with your friends
Standing beside my bench as I ate lunch
They looked at me funny when I told odd stories
And perhaps you were as boisterous as the town crier
Whose shouts made us cry with laughter
Or maybe you were quiet and polite and kept to yourself
I suppose I’ll never know
I doubt I’ll ever find you in the real world
I don’t know if I’d want to
I sipped my drink and you dear sir
Mr. Plague Doctor man
Tipped your tri-corner hat at me and brushed past
And I never did see your face
And told the vendor my name was Liz
Slipping in-and-out of people’s way
While watching costumes and armor and happy faces
I saw you
Clad in a black cape and confidence
Only found in us faire-goers
